Innovative Digital Products In Record Time
As one of Africa's largest financial services groups by assets and a prestigious, long-established institution, our client holds a commanding position across retail banking, short-term insurance, and asset finance. However, this celebrated heritage brought immense architectural complexity, making it difficult to rapidly modernise its technology stack and digitise consumer-facing touchpoints. Despite a strategic focus on becoming an agile, client-centric organization, legacy systems frequently slowed down the launch of new products.
In 2019, Retro Rabbit was onboarded as a preferred digital delivery partner, tasked with a major strategic milestone: integrating an acquired short-term insurance business into the bank's digital portfolio. Our team successfully re-engineered and relaunched the product within six months - a massive shift for an institution accustomed to lengthy deployment cycles.
This initial success established our reputation as elite engineering partners capable of building innovative front-end channels and seamlessly integrating them into monolithic back-end legacy systems across several key initiatives:
Core Digital Products Delivered
Short-Term Insurance Conversational Platform
We helped launch the first insurance product in South Africa capable of handling the entire user journey - from onboarding to self-service and claims - via a conversational chatbot interface. Our engineering team redesigned the user experience, reskinned the front-end to reflect the bank’s premium brand identity, and overhauled the channel layer to comply with strict institutional architecture rules.
Omnichannel WhatsApp Relationship Manager (WARM)
Following the success of our conversational AI work, we built a secure relationship management system to handle client WhatsApp interactions. What began as a tool to monitor engagement quickly evolved into a full-service banking channel. It now supports complex self-service, real-time client queries, and transactional banking features, completely integrated into the bank's core transactional platform.
Wealth and Asset Management Dashboard
To empower clients to manage their portfolios holistically, we augmented the product team of an award-winning mobile wealth application. The unified platform allows users to aggregate and track their entire asset ecosystem - including properties, vehicles, pension funds, share portfolios, and ETFs - in a single dashboard, regardless of where those assets are held or managed.
Challenges
Navigating Core Legacy Environments
The bank operates a massive footprint of legacy mainframes while simultaneously executing a multi-year cloud migration. This meant our software engineering team had to build robust integration layers against internal system architectures that were in a constant state of flux.
Internal Stakeholder and Corporate Alignment
Large financial institutions naturally balance engineering delivery with complex governance, compliance, and corporate structures. Retro Rabbit’s laser-focus on delivery required proactive cultural leadership to align multi-disciplinary internal teams, foster project ownership, and unlock institutional bottlenecks.
Cross-Functional Silos
The bank’s operating model features distinct, isolated business units. Because our conversational and wealth platforms spanned multiple divisions, a key challenge was orchestrating technical and operational dependencies across separate banking, insurance, and compliance departments.
Month-End Transactional System Overload
During high-volume month-end processing windows, core banking systems faced immense data stress, causing downstream latency. Our engineers had to design fault-tolerant applications that shielded our front-end channels from backend performance degradation.
Engineering Solutions & Results
Rapid Iteration and Deployment: We delivered a fully functioning, chat-based enterprise relationship tool within just four months from inception, which has now scaled into an indispensable, core banking transactional channel.
Mainframe Optimization and Stability: By engineering highly optimized, load-balanced front-end integration layers, our team successfully protected backend mainframe capacity. This mitigated high-volume month-end computing constraints and drastically improved system uptime for end users.
Sustained Delivery Momentum: Retro Rabbit deployed self-sustaining engineering squads that established deep trust relationships with internal vertical leads. This seamless collaboration allowed the bank to build, test, and ship premium digital products at a velocity previously unachievable without massive infrastructure overhauls.
